Photos of Outreach Activities

Since its inception, IHPC has been a nurturing ground for budding young scientists who wish to learn about the cutting-edge R&D of Computational Science and to immerse themselves into the world of Modelling, Simulation and Visualisation. Our calender of outreach events lets both students and schools keep up to date with the latest interesting activities and happenings throughout the year.

Public Exhibitions

  • X-periment 2012

  • World Cities Summit 2012

  • X-periment 2012 (27th 2012f July 2012)

IHPC researchers were onsite at Marina Square to interact with members of the public, at X-periment 2012.  The three-day Science Fair, a major highlight of the Singapore Science Festival, was held at the end of July 2012.

IHPC’s key exhibit was an updated version of the Lightdraw technology, which proved to be fun for both kids and adult to use.

A typical Lightdraw set-up features a projector, web camera, laser pointers and the Lightdraw software running on a computer. Lightdraw thus allows end users to interact with software running on a projection screen, by using laser pointers.

With Lightdraw in action, users can use their laser pointers to rotate objects, control onscreen elements and even play games! (And as the photos show, the X-periment visitors had fun playing with Lightdraw.)

    World Cities Summit 2012 (01st 2012f July 2012)

IHPC took part in the World Cities Summit 2012, held at the Marina Bay Sands convention centre from July 1 to July 4.

IHPC joined fellow A*STAR SERC (Science and Engineering Council) research institutes, the Institute of Infocomm Research (I2R) and Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) , and other government agencies under one massive booth.

There were two well-received exhibits by IHPC at WCS:

    • Urban Climate Monitoring by Fluid Dynamics Department

The exhibit from Fluid Dynamics Department contained a video clip that explained the intricacies involved in mapping the wind patterns in the Marina Bay area.

    • Diseases and the Urban Environment by Computing Science Department

The Computing Science Department in IHPC teamed up with the Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) to present a joint project that explored whether there is a trend, or symbiotic timed relationship, between Singapore’s weather conditions and potential dengue outbreaks.

IHPC Student Seminar on Complex systems (02nd 2012f August 2012)

It was Complexity Simplified as experts on the subject of complex systems shared their insights for the benefit of the audience at the recent IHPC Student Seminar.

The topic of Complex Systems, or Complexity as some might term it, kept over 300 participants enthralled at the IHPC Student Seminar held on 2 August.

Kudos to the three speakers and their interesting presentations:

    • Dr Erika Fille Tupas Legara from IHPC, ‘Complexity in Nature & Society’
    • Assistant Professor CHEONG Siew Ann from Nanyang Technological University, ‘Complex Data From Complex Systems: A Survivor’s Toolkit’
    • Dr. Alexander Erath from the Singapore-ETH Centre, Future Cities Laboratory, ‘Perspectives of Future Urban Mobility and the Role of Transport Modeling’

    Science Chronicles 2011 Ceremony (31st 2013f January 2013)

The Science Chronicles 2011 prize presentation was held in Jan 2012. 42 students and 8 teachers attended the ceremony. Seven out of eight prize winners from the 2011 competition were in attendance, including both first prize winners. They walked away with book vouchers and cash awards.

The Science Chronicles competition, which IHPC has organised since 2008, is an annual short story writing competition that invites students to craft science fiction tales with a technology background.

The winning students kindly shared their inspiration for their thought-provoking story ideas with the audience, providing plenty of insights into how their young minds imagined the future impact and unlimited potential of innovations brought about by science and engineering today – and tomorrow.

Which, according to the winners, includes a vast sea of exciting possibilities such as travelling in time and space and creating emotional androids that can sacrifice themselves for the benefit of human beings!
