- Visualisation Camp 2007 saw overwhelming response!
The annual 2-day camp organised for secondary school students saw 352 students from 38 secondary schools participating in the event this year. In collaboration with the Singapore Science Centre, the Visualisation Camp or V-Camp is a familiar event on the IHPC calendar and is an integral part of IHPC’s science outreach activities. Due to the overwhelming response, 2 separate sessions were held from 13-14 March and 15-16 March.
Students were introduced to the exciting world of 3D visualisation through a variety of activities that included a 3D Appreciation Workshop as well as demonstrations in the IHPC COVE and on the IHPC 2x3 Tile Display. Mr Vincent Ong, Managing Director of IM Innovations, was also invited to give a presentation on the current and
future uses of visualisation technologies. In the COVE, students had the opportunity to square off with each other through a computerised game of chess. Utilising the capabilities of Grid and Cluster Computing, the students were able to apply their skill and strategies to the game whilst an audience viewed the game in real-time on the COVE display.
Other activities included the screening of 3D movie files on the 2x3 Tile Display. These movies, unlike those seen on a conventional screen, can be viewed through special red-blue paper goggles. By putting on the goggles, the images of the movies stand out from the screen and appear 3D to the viewers. The educational activities held at the Science Centre reinforced the objective of the Visualisation Camp as well. Students had the opportunity to tour the latest exhibition called the iFuture and iSpace in the main gallery.
They also participated in a games design workshop that allowed them to create realistic 3D environments using a simple click-and-drag software programme. Once again, with the overwhelming number of students coupled with the continued support of the secondary schools, Visualisation Camp 2007 was a resounding success. Here at IHPC, we thank all schools for their participation and we hope to see you again next year in 2008!
