IHPC continued its Seminar Series this year with a theme on Digital Modelling. More than 200 students and teachers gathered at the A*Star Auditorium to hear from the experts, the exciting and cool things that can be achieved within the realm of Digital Modelling. From the way humans make use of the technology to view the world to the actual creation of another universe altogether, the students and teachers were
given a visual treat that left them spellbound and enchanted.Professor Nigel Weatherill, IHPC’s Scientist-In-Residence started things off with his Promises for the 21st Century. In his presentation, Professor Weatherill touched on the uses of using Visualisation techniques as part of the learning on Digital Modelling. He gave various examples in
the aerospace and automotive industries on how Digital Modelling is an avenue of research that can greatly reduce the amount of time, effort and resources spent on the design and production of the many modes of transport that we have in the world today. He also touched upon how the applications of Digital Modelling can be diversified to include those in the medical and biological arenas.

Following that, Professor Adrian Cheok from the National University of Singapore gave his presentation on Mixed Reality Social and Physical Interaction and Entertainment. Professor Cheok spoke about his work as director of his own interactive entertainment company, Mixed Reality and how the international gaming industry has bloomed within the last decade to include much more interactivity in their products. He also introduced ‘Age Invaders’, a game that his company created and produced to allow for interactivity between elderly people and the young generation.

Next, Dr Su Yi, who is team leader of the Digital Modelling and Visualisation team at IHPC, presented on his topic ‘3D Visual Perception in Virtual Reality’. Using simple interactive exercises conducted with the students present, such as looking at a stereogram,
he was able to bring out the differences in lateral and frontal vision. Dr Su also used some of the IHPC visualisation success stories such as the air-condition flow in the Esplanade Theatre and the Changi MRT station to illustrate the advantages that visualisation can offer to engineers in solving problems.

‘Looking At Things Differently: Visualisation in Research and Everyday Life’ was the last topic of discussion by Mr Harold Soh, another fellow research at IHPC in the Advanced Computing programme. Mr Soh went back to basics by asking the students what Science was about and probing further, what was the difference between Science and Art. He also shared about his work at IHPC and did a simple experiment among the student audience to illustrate a real-life scenario of the rate of infection and spread of diseases in a community using Grid Computing.
